New York Yankees rookie sensation Oswaldo Cabrera was taken off the field in an ambulance after suffering a brutal ankle injury on Saturday night.
Cabrera, 23, was making a routine play in the sixth inning when he awkwardly twisted his ankle while trying to field a ground ball. The shortstop immediately grabbed at his ankle and crumpled to the ground in pain. He was then placed on a stretcher and taken off the field.
The severity of the injury was evident as he was placed in an ambulance for further evaluation.
The Yankees announced that Cabrera had been diagnosed with an ankle sprain and had been placed on the 10-day injured list.
The team also shared an X-ray of his ankle, which showed no fracture. Despite the positive news, manager Aaron Boone admitted that it was a scary moment for the team.
“It was obviously a scary play. It was a freak play,” Boone said. “When I saw him grab at his ankle like that and the way he kind of just crumpled to the ground, my thoughts immediately went to, worst case scenario, it was a really awkward, unnatural twist.
So we knew it was something significant. To see the X-ray come back negative, that's great news. But it's still a sprained ankle and we'll see how it goes.”
Cabrera has been one of the bright spots for the Yankees this season. The 23-year-old has impressed with his versatility, playing multiple positions and providing a spark to the offense. In 51 games this season, Cabrera is hitting 222 with five home runs and 19 RBIs.
The Yankees are already dealing with a number of injuries, including to their starting rotation. Luis Severino is expected to be out for the remainder of the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. While the team is awaiting the return of ace Gerrit Cole from a groin injury, Cabrera's absence will be felt.
Boone said that the team will likely call up a player from Triple A to replace Cabrera on the roster. However, he declined to comment on who might be called up. The Yankees have several options in Triple A, including shortstop prospects Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza.
As for Cabrera, he will be re-evaluated in a week to determine a course of treatment and a possible timeline for his return. The Yankees are hopeful that he will be able to make a full recovery and be back in action at some point this season.
